SYDNEY v GWS
The Sydney Swans have completed their AAMI Community Series campaign on a high, securing a 38 point win over the GWS Giants in challenging conditions at Henson Park.
In a rain affected contest that demanded territory and discipline, Sydney proved the more composed outfit, prevailing 14.13 (97) to 8.11 (59) to build valuable momentum ahead of Opening Round. The Swans’ midfield unit was particularly dominant, controlling stoppages and clearances (Sydney finished +11 in centre clearances) and controlled territory in the second half, reinforcing the midfield dominance that proved decisive in the wet conditions. while consistently driving the ball forward to generate repeat inside 50 opportunities.
Wet Weather Battle
Although conditions were manageable early, steady rainfall soon turned the contest into a scrap. Clean ball movement was difficult, forcing both sides to abandon expansive handball chains in favour of safer, territory based football which resulted in a lot of dump off hack kicks.
Sydney adapted better to the conditions, gaining control of field position as the game wore on. Their dominance in the second half translated into scoreboard pressure, with repeat entries eventually breaking the Giants’ resistance.
Standout Performers
Sydney’s midfield group set the tone, led by Angus Sheldrick and James Rowbottom, who were strong at the contest and influential around stoppages. Brodie Grundy gave the Swans first use through the ruck, while Isaac Heeney provided class and composure in key moments.
For the Giants, Toby Greene worked tirelessly to lift his side, with Jake Stringer offering presence in attack. Lachie Ash was also prominent, using the ball effectively across half back despite the difficult conditions.
